Architecture

The building was designed in an Italianate Renaissance style that is typified by the symmetrical façade, hip roof, recessed entry with classical columns and cornice, and keystone features above the windows. The stucco exterior was applied over brick.

Some local residents disliked the design, hoping “to have a better looking and more imposing building.” They voiced their concerns to local U.S. Congressman William C. Houston, who wrote a series of letters to James Knox Taylor, urging him to delay the completion of the post office in order to redesign the building. After numerous delays and setbacks, the building was completed in December 1909 at a total cost of $42,058.
